The Project involved structural strengthening comprising Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic CFRP reinforcement to the east and west piers of the Willen Lake Floodplain bridge. Works included strengthening of the verge slab and associated tie beams, replacement of the existing parapets, strengthening of the concrete upstand beams and replacement of the existing movement joints. General concrete repairs were undertaken with cementitious mortar and cathodic protection.

The work involved the restoration of stonework of all three span arches of the bridge, the balustrades above these spans and replacing brickwork with stonework to the south west wing wall. Provision of works platforms by means of floating pontoons on the river and with scaffold access of them to the bridge elevations. Provision of traffic safety barriers on the carriageway when balustrades are removed. Taking down defective and damaged sections of stonework to bridge arches, elevations, spandrel walls. Replacement natural stone in lime mortar to bridge arches, cut waters, spandrel walls and balustrades in individual stone blocks and ‘piecing-in-stones’. Taking down and relaying natural stone ashlar coping. Raking out and re-pointing stonework with lime mortar. Lime mortar repairs in small areas. Locating, removing iron cramps in existing stones and making good. Cleaning stonework to remove leachate. Biocide treatment of weeds on cutwaters.

Construction of 4000m² spine road, foul and storm-water drainage including microbore beneath British Rail’s main Oxford to Birmingham line. 14,000m³ landscape bund, skewed 33m clear span road bridge over the Oxford Canal. 65T edge beams, reinforced earth abutments, brickwork cladding to the whole structure.

The work comprised the demolition of the existing 36m long, 6 span bridge deck and replacement with a lightweight steel deck Refurbishment of the existing substructure above and below the waterline. Other parts of the works included installation of new parapets, application of a paint protection system, expansion joints and bearing installation. |
This Project was awarded a “Highly Commended Award” via the Engineering Excellence Awards 2006, ICE South East England. |

Steel Edge Beams were replaced with reinforced concrete plinths, including re-construction of the brickwork pilasters. Cast Iron fascias and Cast Iron Parapets were re-conditioned and re-used. The site is in a conservation area.
